2. Coldcard - How to Clone or Migrate a Coldcard
In this guide, we’ll show you how to clone or migrate data from your existing Coldcard onto a new one.
Here’s what you’ll need:
The source Coldcard you want to clone
A new, empty Coldcard you’ll be copying data to
Two power sources to power each Coldcard at the same time
And a microSD card with a max capacity of 32GB
Start by preparing your empty Coldcard. Connect it to your power supply and continue through the usual setup process. After you’ve set your PIN number, the device will display the main menu.
Select ‘Import Existing’, and then ‘Clone Coldcard’
Insert your microSD card into the new Coldcard and press OK. A file will be written to the microSD card containing the key needed by your source Coldcard to encrypt the cloning data. You should now see a message reminding you to keep the Coldcard powered during this process.
Remove the microSD card. DO NOT disconnect this Coldcard from the power source.
Now take your source Coldcard, connect it to your other power source, and log in. Insert the microSD card from the empty Coldcard.
From the main menu, select ‘Advanced’, then ‘MicroSD Card’, and then ‘Clone Coldcard’
The device will immediately encrypt the necessary data and display a message when complete. You can disconnect the source Coldcard after the file is saved.
Remove the microSD card from the source Coldcard and insert it into the empty Coldcard, which should still be powered on and showing the same message from before. Press OK to start cloning.
You’ll see a message telling you when the cloning process has finished. Press OK and your newly cloned Coldcard will reboot.
Congrats, you’ve successfully cloned your Coldcard! You can verify both Coldcards are using the same seed by powering up and logging into both devices and selecting Advanced from the menu, and then View Identity on each. If the 8 character master key fingerprints match, your cloning was a success.
